"A Prescription for Faith"
Featured Review
This book is an engagingly written personal example of religious faith seamlessly and naturally united with medical practice. But it is not just about the practice of medicine but of life in all its many dimensions; and that autobiographical concreteness makes it more winsome and convincing than the cleverest abstract principles and arguments.

You are in for an engaging read. Each short chapter presents an aspect of being a doctor, treating patients afflicted by a variety of ills, taken in a wide sense, from homelessness to heart disease, from loneliness to living in skilled nursing facilities, from Alzheimer’s disease to addictions to brain tumors, and many more categories of suffering. Each chapter is introduced by an experience in the life of the author, leading into a description of several patients who are presented with succinct yet rich descriptions, as they struggle with various health problems, and receive the care of this doctor.
The picture emerges of a cardiologist whose heart is nourished by faith, and whose deepest desire is to serve. His faith moves him to look past the unlovely appearance of disease to see the human person who is bearing the burden, and even further: to glimpse Christ in the suffering person, that is, to see the beauty that is hidden. As he treats his patients, he encounters Jesus who teaches him and helps him to grow humanly and spiritually. Practicing medicine is not simply a one-way communication of health expertise, but a two-way exchange, enriching both patient and doctor.
From this book we may come away with a desire to see the people we encounter in a new way, to set aside the judgments that we so easily make, while asking ourselves how we may help those who are suffering in various ways. As it is for the author, so it will be for us: faith will show us the way.

In A Prescription for Faith, Dr. Caceres not only gives the triumphs and successes in his journey, but he also shares with us the failures as well, and how he learned from them. In a chapter devoted to addictions, he discusses his regrets that he was not able to help a patient quit smoking. In spite of giving the patient advice to quit and Christian literature to help guide him, the patient ultimately did not quit and finally expired. The valuable lesson for all of us in the medical field is that we can all do better in our patient care and there is no complacency in medicine, only the journey to get better for our patients' sake.

As a physician, that is my take home message from A Prescription for Faith. How can I do better for my patients? That is the question I ask myself. Dr. Caceres' answer is "And above all, have faith." This is so true! All of us, whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc., we all must have faith. Especially now during this pandemic. The country does not trust science and has lost faith in the medical community. We are under attack and the only way we are going to weather the storm is by having faith.

A Prescription for Faith gives us, the medical community, a breath of fresh air. It brings us back to why we all became physicians: to deliver the best care to our patients. What a triumph! Glory to God for using you to write this book.

I have had the distinct privilege of being one of the first few fortunate individuals to have read Prescription in Faith. During my review one can easily understand how the author Dr. Caceres uses medical science as well as his faith in God to heal. Prescription in Faith is a look into the history of some of his patients who have suffered and are currently suffering serious life-threatening illnesses. I truly experience a very deep sense of sorrow for Dr. Caceres, when I read his early life experiences, his struggles and tragedies especially when he was three years old and remembers viewing the cross on his mother’s coffin. I also liked how after every chapter there was a scripture reading that pertained to the chapter. Prescription in Faith gives you a sense of how humanity suffers and gives you hope and understanding of the reality of science and medicine and how prayer and faith blend in to healing oneself. I have been a patient of Dr. Caceres for over 5 years, and he has saved my life. Everyone should read Prescription in Faith. The hope the book gives you is that you are truly in God’s hands.

I want to let you know that I finished reading "A Prescription for Faith" over the weekend and I have to tell you it is BRILLIANT. In 26 years of reviewing books professionally I have never seen anything like it. The layout of the book is so unique. It is somewhere between a biography, a medical memoir and a spiritual self-help book. And the language is just gorgeous, poetic like reading a dream but so honest that you don't doubt it for a second.
I gave a 5 star recommendation to "A Prescription for Faith" in my virtual book club, so look forward to several new reviews in the near future!
